How it all got started...

Just last year, I was yelling at the television daily, and my husband suggested that I try another approach to my frustration at the media coverage on the mortgage crisis.

My husband and I love to watch “The Big Idea” with Donny Duestch. It is a great show about how to find your dream job – it is usually right in front of your eyes – if you only opened them for just a minute. One night – right before the end of the show – Donny looked at the camera and said – “If you could do anything and you knew that you could not fail – what would it be?” And then it was over…. That sparked by husband to ask me “Well – what would you do?” Without taking a breathe – I said “ I would have a radio show to explain to everyone about how to get a mortgage - what the truth is about the market now – everything – I would help them make buying a house easy!”

A few days later – he asked - very casually – what I had done to get the ball rolling… I had totally forgotten my profound thoughts on my future… I was busy getting people mortgages and being a mom, doing laundry and planting flowers in the beds in the yard… not thinking anything about that conversation. So he asked again a few days later… I said I just need to convince someone at our local radio station to give me a show… and laughed. He wanted to know when I was going to do that… the gauntlet had been thrown down and what did I have to loose. I called the General Manager of our local talk station – Ben Downs. I had sold radio advertising 15 years earlier – in another life and doubted that he would remember me… he did and he wondered what had happened to me. I explained to him that I was a mortgage broker and wanted to tell people the truth about the business – it is not as hard to understand as people make it out to be. He said that we could talk the following week..after many conversations – we thought if the stars aligned and I could put together what I would do – we could talk again.

Well, I kept going back with more ideas and advertisers and guests and eventually I had him thinking that this just might work. Although I had no on air radio training to start with, they gave me to our station engineer to explain all about radio and clocks and technical stuff. Yes, I am better now but those first days were rough. Now every show that I do has a different clock, different bumper music and ads… we have come such a long way in such a short time. WTAW in College Station is a dream job…who knew…..

Jump ahead six months and another dare from a friend and I landed another job with two sister stations in Houston and Dallas for weekend shows. I just happened to be at the right place at the right time and again – very nice people bet on me… and I have another home and KSEV in Houston and KVCE in Dallas is another step that I never dreamed that I would or could take.

I now work everyday in the mortgage business helping people get their dream homes and every morning on the radio in Dallas Texas on KVCE. I truly have the best jobs.

I am just now starting to speak to San Antonio on KTSA on Saturday nights. I grew up in San Antonio and the only station that I could get on my radio in my room was KTSA. I think everything comes around full circle….

I am truly blessed with a wonderful dream job and family.

See what happens when you mix late night tv and a husband that is daring you to do better – be better.
